Start-Ups
There is quite a bit to think about before starting your own business, and there are many differing stories around how hard or easy it may be.
Our advice is to know the following before anything else:
- What am I wanting to achieve from my business:
- Lifestyle choices and freedom?
- Financial stability and success?
- To make a difference?
- To just never have to work for someone else again (we do have some seriously bad news for you on this front!)?
- What is my WHY? Yes this does relate to the above, but it is slightly different in so far as this is more about the why your potential customers would want to come to you?
- What is my WHO? This is exactly as it sounds – who am I planning to sell to? When starting out this needs to be very niche, if your answer is everyone, you’re speaking 5-10 years ahead of yourself and planning to fail (sorry, spoilers!).
- What is my WHAT? Again, self-explanatory, what are you selling? Service or product, it doesn’t matter, what matters is you know what people are buying. Give you a hint: McDonalds don’t sell burgers, they sell convenience and speed!
- What is my HOW? See the pattern yet? How are you going to both find and sell to these customers of yours? Online, in person, via osmosis, I mean how? Another How in this is financial; how much will I need to set this up, keep me housed and fed, and the kids in school whilst I make this happen?
- What is my WHERE? This does venture a little into the above, but it isn’t just a where regarding online or not, this where includes any geographical boundaries.
- What is my WHEN? This is the final question. When will I be ready to get started and do this?
