She has seen how a business runs from the inside, and how the wider economy lands on the people running it.

I assumed, as new people do, that the situation was being exaggerated for effect. It was not. Eric tells dad jokes constantly, with the full and unshakeable confidence of a man who believes each one is landing. I want to report that I am coping well. Years of dance training turn out to be excellent preparation for holding a composed, professional expression on cue, and I am quietly grateful for it every single day. I have been briefed on the Johnson problem. I understand that he laughs, genuinely, and that this has made everything harder for everyone. I have chosen not to take sides. I have also chosen not to laugh. So far, the strategy is holding. |
